Rondo-to-Hawks chatter ‘gaining steam’ before free agency

Lakers point guard Rajon Rondo brings up the ball against the Mavericks.

Talk of free agent point guard Rajon Rondo joining the Atlanta Hawks has “gained a ton of steam,” according to Legion Hoops Ross.

NBA free agency begins Friday at 6 p.m. EST.

Rondo has been linked to the Hawks and several others, including the Boston Celtics, by multiple media outlets.

He spent last season playing a key role in the Los Angeles Lakers’ run to the championship — but is not expected to return to LA after the team traded for point guard Dennis Schroder, formerly of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Rondo, 34, averaged 8.9 points and 6.6 assists in 16 playoff games.

The Hawks have also been mentioned as possible suitors of Thunder free agent forward Danilo Gallinari. They have a significant amount of space under the salary cap.
