Former Suns star Stoudemire to assist Nash with Nets

Former NBA center Amar'e Stoudemire drives to the basket during an international game.

Former NBA center Amar’e Stoudemire will join old friend Steve Nash on the Brooklyn Nets’ coaching staff, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Nash was hired as Nets coach last month and is entering his first season as a head coach at any level. He presumably will be armed with stars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving for the 2020-21 season.

Stoudemire, of course, teamed with Nash during the Seven Seconds or Less era of Phoenix Suns basketball, under then-coach Mike D’Antoni, that featured lots of fastbreaks and 3-point attempts. Nash was the point guard, winning back-to-back league MVPs and lobbing passes to Stoudemire for easy jams.

Stoudemire will focus on player development with the Nets, Charania reported.

A six-time All-Star, Stoudemire just recently completed a successful run overseas, primarily with Israeli power Maccabi Tel Aviv.
