Gasol says fight for ring behind decision to join Lakers

Former Raptors center Marc Gasol signed with the Lakers in free agency.

New Los Angeles Lakers center Marc Gasol said the decision to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers just made sense.

“It is a team that will fight for the ring and has just won it,” Gasol told Artau Pascual Selis of Esmaixada.cat . “For me, the feeling of waking up every day with the option or intention of fighting for the ring gives me a lot of fuel. For me, this is important, basic, it is a historical franchise of which I was anecdotally part many years ago and of which (brother) Pau was also a part. I feel familiar with the city.”

Gasol won a championship in 2019 with the Toronto Raptors. The Lakers won the title last season. Gasol became a free agent in the fall.

“I live day to day, I can’t fool you. I’ve gotten to a point where I don’t look beyond what I have in front of me. It’s like a 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 contract,” Gasol said. “When you finish each contract you have to look at how it went and make decisions. You can’t make commitments beyond what you have in front of you.”

The Lakers of LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Gasol tip off the season Dec. 22.
